Lesson 1:  Introduction to the Realities of Extra Work

Too many contractors do too much extra work for free!  Ahh, “Extra Work”.  “Extra” revenue.  The dream of every contractor-sometimes contorted into a kind of a nightmare!  Even though you expected it to be a kind of a good thing, something has happened and it has caused you all kinds of grief.  The reason you are reading this book right now is because you already know that to be true.  You’ve tried being the “nice guy” or “nice gal”, but found that your clients often took advantage of you.  On account of that, the profitability of your projects has suffered.

Lesson 2 – Begin At The Beginning

In the next lesson we’ll get into the basics of project management.  But there are some things that need to be in place before we can practice successful Full Contact Project Management.  In athletics, it’s a rare individual who can step onto the varsity field without first having toiled for years at a lesser level.  And even the varsity players, themselves, understand that it must come together and practice as a team in the summer if it expects to be excellent in the fall.

Lesson 3:  Full Contact PM 101

At the heart of the Full Contact PM philosophy is knowing the difference between “contract” and “extra” work.  And I’ll state for the record that most contractors don’t really understand and appreciate that difference.  Well then, what in the heck is “extra” work?

Lesson 4:  RFI-Our First String Defense

Your team comes out of the tunnel and onto the field.  It is lead by its defense-the most important players in the game.  The crowd goes wild.  They realize that, if the defense does an excellent job, the other team will not score on them.  Think about this:  if your defense shuts out the other team, the worst you can do today is tie.  And, if your defense does a better-than-excellent job, it might just score, itself.  Life is sweet with an excellent defense.

Lesson 5:  Watching Our First String Defense Play

Winning is crucial to the long-term survival of your job, your career, and your firm.  It’s a life-and-death kind of a thing, so I’ll use the terms “game” and “play” advisedly.  This is serious stuff.  Keep that in mind.

Lesson 6:  Our First Offensive Play

Sometimes your client agrees with you!

Guess what?  Not every one of our plays is run by the defense.  Our offense also runs plays, and we’ll now see one.  This particular play is run once your client agrees with your RFI that, indeed, some sort of out-of-scope work is called for.  What makes this an offensive play is that the client has, in effect, handed the ball over to you, and is actually expecting that you are going to score!

Lesson 7:  We Call an Audible

Your client can disagree?

You betcha!  Some clients are just wired this way:  the first thing that they do is to take exception with your RFI.  And with some clients, it doesn’t matter whether your RFI is logical or not-they’ll let you know that it is out of line.  Don’t get upset.  This is just the way they do things.

Lesson 8:  Keeping Score

It’s not enough to just go ahead right now and proceed with the extra work-the “issue”.  We need to get a bit philosophical first.  So, here goes.

Lesson 9:  Why is Everything an Issue?

I’ve heard it all before:  “Coach, why is everything such an issue with you?”  Or, “Why make such a big deal over it?”  Of course, Coach has a short answer:  It’s developing in your company a winning mindset.  In other words, we expect to win.  Successful teams practice this belief, whether in an athletic contest or as gladiators in the arena of business.

Lesson 10:  Wrapping It All Up

Foremen are the linebackers on your team.  As such, it’s as an important a position as we have on the team.  Why?  Because most of the time our team is in a defensive mode.  Remember earlier?  We said that we expect our defense to score.  A top-notch defense can shut out the other team, plus score on occasion.  In our game, that’s practically all you need to win!
